5 Gallon New White Oak Barrel For Aging Whiskey, Bourbon, Wine, Cider, Beer Or As Decor

This would have been a 1-star because the first barrel I received leaked like a sieve when first putting water in it, and still leaked up to a quart a day after a week. I contacted HomeBrewOhio by email explaining the issue. They worked with the manufacturer to determine I received a defective barrel and shipped me a new one without any issue. For this, I give HomeBrewOhio and the manufacturer Five-Stars. The new barrel holds water a lot better but not as good as the 28l Hungarian Oak barrel I already have. But the availability and price of this barrel makes it a strong contender. Manufacturing tolerances could be tighter, but again, for the price, this is well worth it. One option I would like to see is a toasted barrel instead of charred. I use this for my homemade wine, for which toasted oak is much preferred. I see if I was making distilled spirits that the charring is preferred. The results of aging my wine is TBD, but it is working so far as to holding my wine.

These barrels are great for the price. The caveat is that you may have to tighten the hoops before swelling it, to make sure it won't leak. These barrels are not meant for aging wine, wine barrels have thicker staves and are toasted, not charred. These barrels are great for aging liquor of any kind, and given the thin nature of the staves, it will speed up the process. I filled one with cheap whiskey last fall and now, 6 months later the whiskey is a lot better.
